| I was the only person on the battlefield.
Peaceful, chilling. The Confederate earthworks look
intimidating. The Ridge in the picture would have protected
the infantry, the ditch in front would have held abatis,
etc. Union lines are 200 yards to the left, easily
visible. How they ever convinced the men to attack I have no
idea.
Union casualties include 7,000 dead in the first seven
minutes. I have heard there was a a third attack ordered,
but the men simply refused to budge, and their officers refused to
force them onwards. I'll check on that.
I have to go back to this battlefield, it's awesome, in the
truest sense of the word.
