The information plaque about the overall battle
and strategy of the Confederate advance. Personally, it
seems a bit of a stretch to be calling it an invasion of
Maryland. Unlike the invasions of the Army of Northern
Virginia under Robert E Lee, which came with an intent to defeat
and conquer the Union armies, this assault under Early was little
more than a raid, designed mainly to try and relieve pressure from
the Union's death grip around Richmond and Petersburg by forcing
Grant to divert a few divisions to deal with the threat. |

| Information about the Confederates setting up
their artillery on the Best family farm. The farm suffered
greatly during this battle. |

An overview of the Best family farm. The
main bridge is to the left, just off the picture, the Confederate
batteries would have been placed in these fields, and the ford
they used to outflank the Union troops lies beyond the buildings
in the distance. The Monocacy river lies within the trees
seen at the left, and curves away from the viewer, behind the
distant farm. |
