Here you can see the bulge inside the cannon caused by the shell strike on the outside of the barrel.

This is a close up of the same bulge - you can see how it would prevent the shell from being loaded into the cannon, it would no longer be able to slide past this point to the vent where the friction primer could set off the charge.  Note the rifling inside the tube.
