Looking down the barrel. You
can see the vent that would take the friction primer. The trees
would have been gone, to clear away a field of fire for the
cannon. Much of the battlefield at Petersburg would have been
nothing but dirt and mud, as opposed to the trees and verdant growth
you see there today.
