Battery Eight of the Dimmock Line
A detail from a picture of a battery of Union troops in action at the former Battery Eight location.  They have already put up a rapid entrenchment, actually outside of Battery Eight.  You can see that the interior slope has not been revetted with logs or sandbags, as compared with the battery in the distance, where you can see a small piece of the interior construction to the left of the flag and standing men.

This picture shows the Union troops occupying Battery Eight five days after it's capture by men of the 1st and 22nd colored troops.  Famed Civil War photographer Matthew Brady stands next to the cannon in the center, wearing a straw hat.  They do not seem to expect any counter battery artillery fire, or any effective small arms fire to be directed upon the position, judging from the relaxed and casual attitudes of the men in the picture.

Union troops demolished battery eight, and built a redan on the site.
